Matrescence is the developmental term that defines a person’s transition into Motherhood. It encompasses the psychological, emotional, physical, spiritual and social changes that a person experiences through this transition. Basically, it defines the ground-shaking transformation that is stepping into motherhood. This process doesn’t occur overnight, is not linear, and looks different for every mother. It can start well before we even conceive and, well, it may never end, but generally, it has the most impact during our first 2-3 years of motherhood.
Motherhood is messy, it’s hard and often painful. But it also has immense potential to catapult us into a bigger, truer, more empowered version of ourselves. As mothers, we are constantly bumping up against culturally appraised ideals of who we should be and what we should be doing in order to be a “good” mama. We are given little space to turn inward and find our own voice. We are given little permission to pave our own path aligned with our unique values.
This container offers a safe space to rest into this rite of passage, undo cultural conditionings that don’t work for you, embody your new identity and deeply connect with other mamas going through this rite of passage. A mother who is doing her own inner work and is tending to her own needs is able to show up more fully for her children. Through consciously mothering our children and ourselves, we are actively creating positive change in this world. This is the movement.
Wherever you may be at in your Matrescence journey (conceiving, pregnant, mother of 1,2,3,4…), if this container speaks to you, there is a seat at the table for you.
